Hot Hatchbacks are hands down our favourite type of car. Forget Ferraris and Lamborghinis for a second, they’re far too expensive and impractical. If we had to choose a new car right now, it would be one of these little beauties. They are built to fly like a sportscar; they’re fast, aggressive and handle like a dream. Yet, at the same time, you can squeeze it into a parking space in town. These are the hot hatchbacks. They are high performance small cars that come with a thrill.
1. Ford Fiesta ST
The Fiesta is the UK’s best selling car model ever. It is reliable, practical and cheap to run. With the ST range, they also made it fast and exciting. It has a top speed of nearly 140mph and will reach 60 in just over six seconds. You can throw it brutally around corners and it will respond in kind. It’s quite simply the best hot hatch out there. If you do want a bit more size, the Focus ST is another great choice.
2. Peugeot 208 GTi
If you ask anyone over 25 which is the best ever hot hatch, chances are they’ll say the old Peugeot 205. The 205 has gone down in motoring history as one of the best small cars ever made. Peugeot seemed to lose their way a little after this, but, they’re back on track now. The new 208 GTi is just phenomenal to drive.
3. Seat Leon Cupra
This one might come as a bit of a surprise. Seat rarely feature on lists of powerful, high performance cars. Well, that’s because underneath the bonnet it shares almost an identical engine with the VW Golf GTi. It has all the magnificence of the Golf, without the price tag. Nippy, responsive and spacious.
4. BMW 1 Series
Again, not a manufacturer you’d usually find on a small car list. But, BMW have a rich history of precision car building. The 1 Series is no different. It’s probably the biggest car on the countdown. The rear wheel drive makes it incredibly fun and it’s the fastest here by a long shot. It’s also the most expensive.
5. Mini Hatchback
The Mini has always been about pure, undiluted fun out on the road. It is probably the most fun little car here. It responds and handles like a go kart (that’s a good thing!) It feels close to the ground and tight in the corners. The Mini has been one of the biggest relaunch successes ever. The experts at Imperial Car Supermarket tell us it’s still one of their most popular vehicles. It looks great and it will take anything you can throw at it.
6. Volkswagen Golf GTi
We couldn’t very well leave off the founding father could we? Although there are some better cars out there now, the Golf GTi started it all. VW were the first to build a car of this kind. Small, practical, but fast as hell.
There you have it, folks! Be sure to look out for a few contenders hitting the market in 2015. The Honda Civic Type R is set to make its glorious return. Will it find itself in the top spot this time next year? You’ll have to wait and see.
